Taken from Inflammation -- The study began with inflammatory responses and insulin resistance being induced by palmitate (PA) stimulation for 24 hours. The results of the study suggest that berberine improved insulin sensitivity and demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in PA-stimulated cells.

A 2020 systematic review of over 1,000 women with PCOS found that berberine significantly improved insulin resistance similar to Metformin, induced a redistribution of adipose tissue (body fat), reduced VAT (belly fat) even in the absence of weight loss, and improved ovulation rates, fertility, and live birth rates. (PMID: 32060683)


Taken from Biological trace element research -- In a parallel randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial 60 women with PCOS aged 20–45 years were recruited. Participants were randomly assigned to consume magnesium supplements (containing 250 mg magnesium oxide) or placebo for 8 weeks. After the 8 weeks of magnesium supplementation among women with PCOS the following was found:

  • • Favourable effects on BMI compared with placebo group
  • • A decrease in waist circumference
  • • Increase in serum luteinizing hormone (LH) levels (crucial for ovulation)
  • • A marginally significant decrease was found in serum testosterone levels - compared with placebo group
  • Research has found that the majority of women with PCOS are actually deficient in magnesium. This deficiency is directly linked to insulin resistance. The supplementation of magnesium has been shown to result in improvements in insulin resistance, fasting glucose levels, and lower testosterone levels. (​​PMID: 31696157)

    Chromium picolinate

    A 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis showed that chromium supplementation in PCOS resulted in decreased BMI, fasting insulin levels and also resulted in lowered testosterone levels. (PMID: 28595797)

    Apple cider vinegar

    A 2013 study showed that the intake of apple cider vinegar resulted in a decrease of the homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance index (HOMA-R), an improvement in LH/FSH ratio, ovulatory menstruation was observed in 4/7 patients. These findings suggest that ACV can help to restore ovulatory function through improving insulin sensitivity in PCOS patients, thus, avoiding pharmacological treatment. (PMID: 23666047)

    Green tea extract

    A 2015 study found that green tea consumption leads to a significant reduction in LH serum level, body, and ovarian weight between the green tea extract-treated groups compare to PCOS. Moreover, a significant reduction in insulin resistance index was seen in the treatment groups related to PCOS. Histomorphometric studies also showed significant changes in the number of follicles and theca layer thickness. These changes demonstrated a marked improvement in the symptoms of PCOS which may be due to green tea's effect on oxidative stress pathways. Green tea can be considered a potentially effective drug for the treatment of PCOS. (PMID: 26664389).

    Cinnamon extract
