Fat Tissue in Women with PCOS Produces Excess Androgens.
I just finished reading a new study in the Journal of Endocrinology which found that SAT (subcutaneous adipose tissue or in simple terms - body fat) of women with PCOS produces excess androgens (male sex hormones such as testosterone), which may contribute to PCOS-related hyperandrogenemia (excess androgens).

Symptoms of high androgens in women with PCOS include;
Male-like hair growth (back, chin, chest, belly)
Male-like hair loss or thinning (scalp)
Irregular periods
Fertility issues.
These are often some of the most emotionally taxing symptoms of PCOS.
The researchers found that this excess production of androgens by fat tissue was independent of obesity and is not directly stimulated by insulin or LH, these are all common causes of high androgens in women.
The takeaway? If you do have symptoms and issues with high androgen levels, part of your overall strategy will be to reduce body fat levels through diet, exercise, stress reduction, sleep, and quality supplementation.
